Non freezing cold injuries (NCFI)

Non Freezing Cold Injury (NFCI) is an injury commonly suffered among servicemen and women.  It is a term that describes an injury, typically to hands and feet, that occurs due to prolonged exposure to wet and cold conditions.

Symptoms of NFCI often aren’t realised until an individual returns to a warmer environment.  Reported symptoms of the affected area include:

  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Discolouration of the skin
  • Swelling
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Excessive sweating

There are a number of things that can be done to prevent NFCI such as providing the correct kit and educating individuals about how to prevent the condition.  The short term steps that can be taken to prevent NFCI are often overlooked which can lead to individuals suffering from long term debilitating problems.
