The death of George Floyd has sparked global outrage about the injustices and inequalities that still exist in society.
The Law Society have challenged firms to not just express their sadness and sympathy, but to reflect on their own culture and actions around diversity and culture.
We have an Equality and Diversity policy, setting out our commitment to eliminating and avoiding discrimination and promoting equality and diversity in our policies, practices and procedures and in those areas in which we have influence.
We are determined to ensure that this is a policy that we live and breathe every day and is integrated into our culture. As a consequence we launched Watkins & One – to promote Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and to raise awareness and celebrate significant dates in the EDI calendar.
Many of us are fortunate not have to experience racism in our own lives – but that does not mean it is not there, or that other people are not suffering as a result of it.
We fully support the Law Society’s position and so state that –
• We will strive to ensure access to justice, equality for all under the legal system and to promote the rule of law.
• We will reflect on the actions we must take to tackle discrimination
• We will continue to promote diversity and inclusion in the legal profession, combat any instances of racism or prejudice in the sector and stand against injustice.
