Newport Businessman Is Named Top Leader In The Private Sector

Clive Thomas, Managing Partner, Watkins & Gunn Solicitors has been awarded the Leadership in Private Sector award at this year’s 2011 Leading Wales Awards, the prestigious pan-Wales awards that recognise and celebrate leadership across all levels, in association with Real Radio Wales.

Clive was one of three finalists in the category and was recognised for setting an example and leading from the front.

Ian Price assistant director of the CBI, a Leading Wales Award Consortium member, said; “The importance of leadership is critical to the success of the Welsh economy and as we are lagging behind the rest of the UK at present, it is essential that Wales finds more leaders of the quality that we are recognising here today, to enable Wales to close the gap”. Clive is a fantastic example of this.”

Clive said; “I am delighted and surprised because it was a tough competition. Rhodri Morgan talked about how Wales needs to lead from the front and say yes we can, and that the private sector needs to challenge more. That’s exactly what I feel we have achieved. This award is for everyone at the firm.”

Robin McBryde, Wales Assistant Coach – forwards, addressed the guests on behalf of the WRU who sponsored the Team Leader category, “Leadership is all about recognising the contribution of others.” he said. “I believe it starts with the way we all lead our lives, in a personal and professional capacity, when you’re centred in yourself your beliefs and your values. It’s not something you switch on or off, it’s something people recognise and respect and makes a huge difference.”

Rhodri Morgan, who received an honorary award in recognition of his outstanding leadership and for his contribution to the development of leadership in others, said; “All the people here today represent leaders of the future for Wales. Leadership is all about a willingness to step up to the plate, to put your head above the parapet, to say yes we can. What a fantastic example of this here today. I am really honoured to be here.”

The awards are made up of eight different categories spanning public, private, not-for-profit, social responsibility and the social enterprise sectors as well as recognising individual leadership under the Team Leader and Young Leader (14 - 25 year olds) categories.

The Leading Wales Awards www.leadingwalesawards.com is driven forward by a consortium of organisations that passionately believe that good leadership is the key driver to economic success in Wales. The members are: ACCA Wales, Cardiff Business School, CBI Wales, CMI Cymru, Common Purpose, Harding Evans Solicitors, Hilton Cardiff, Learning Pathways Cymru and Wales Council for Voluntary Action.

The two other finalists were David Thomas, chief executive, Eco2 and Mark Douglas, regional director, Natwest (Wales).
