The Managing Partner of South Wales law firm Watkins & Gunn Solicitors, which has offices in Cardiff, Newport and Pontypool, has signed up to run this year’s Virgin London Marathon in April.

45-year old Clive Thomas will run the 26 miles raising money for Wooden Spoon, a rugby based charity which supports disadvantaged children in Wales and across the UK.

Hoping to raise £2,000 for the cause, this will be Clive’s first marathon. A keen rugby player and member of Barry Rugby Club Veterans, Clive has committed to lose three stone ahead of the marathon and has been training hard.

Adopting his own unique globetrotting approach to training, he began by jogging on a treadmill in the Vale Hotel Health Club then took off to run in the heat of Tenerife, before returning to plodding around the roads of Barry. Most recently he has been running up and down a rooftop pool in the tropical rain in Singapore!

Clive said: “One day whilst pouring another beer into my 20 odd stone frame, followed closely by a pie, I foolishly said I wanted to get a grip and run the London Marathon. Before I knew it I had been lucky enough to be offered a place by the Wooden Spoon Charity.
“I have since been training hard and have lost two stone. Whilst that’s still a fair weight to be carting around London, I am determined to complete the Marathon and I am delighted to be raising money for Wooden Spoon. As a member of the Spoon Wales Committee I have been lucky enough to see the fantastic work that they do at first hand.”
Clive sits on the Wales committee of Wooden Spoon which has over the last 10 years helped to fund a variety of projects for disadvantaged children across south Wales, including sensory gardens, play areas, hydrotherapy pool and community rooms.
Huw Thomas, Chairman of the Wooden Spoon Wales committee, said: “We’re delighted that Clive has decided to run the London Marathon to raise money for Wooden Spoon. He’s taking his training extremely seriously and we’re all behind him in his efforts. His strict diet and training plan is really commendable and we’re confident that he’ll be able to complete the course. As a member of the Wales committee, Clive knows firsthand the difference that the charity can make to disadvantaged children in south Wales and his fundraising efforts will help us to fund a wealth of projects.”

The Virgin London Marathon is one of the great British sporting events, combining elite athletics, mass participation and record-breaking fundraising in one race. The course is a gruelling 26 miles 385 yards long, passing through the streets of London from Blackheath to the famous finish line at The Mall.
