An award-winning law firm has launched a series of seminars aimed at providing an introduction to UK law for Polish residents living in Wales.

Watkins & Gunn Solicitors, which has offices in Cardiff, Pontypool and Newport, is running workshops on a Saturday morning from its Llandaff office.

The seminars will feature information on employment rights, wills, personal injury, moving home, traffic offences and many other legal matters to further attendees’ understanding of UK law.

The seminars will be from 10:30am until 11:30am, on Saturday mornings during March and April and are free to attend.

On the 12th March, the seminar will be on buying and selling a home, on the 9th April the topic will be criminal law and road traffic offences and wills, probate and succession will be on the16th April.

During the seminar, Watkins & Gunn’s Gabriela Kubicka, who is Polish and moved to the UK with her family in 2008, will be delivering bespoke talks in Polish with specialist lawyers on hand to deal with any questions or clarification required by the attendees.

Clive Thomas, managing partner at Watkins & Gunn Solicitors, said: “Gabriela first joined us on work experience and we were so impressed with her hard work ethic that we kept her on to work part time for us while she continues her legal studies at Cardiff University.

“We believe that knowing the law is empowering and knowing the rules of the country you live in is essential. The law in Poland is very different to the UK, and so we have decided to run these seminars.

“The fact that Gabriela, who is fluent in Polish, can deliver the courses in their native tongue, will be a huge benefit to our attendees. The seminars are relevant for both Polish people who have just moved to Wales, and those who have lived here for a number of years but want a better understanding of UK law.

“It’s completely free to attend and we’re happy to answer any questions that attendees may have.”

Gabriela Kubicka said: “When I moved to the UK in 2008, I did not speak much English so it was a very difficult transition. However, I started reading books and, as a result, understanding more English and ended up translating a lot of things for my parents. My father suggested that I looked into a career in law and, after undergoing a work placement at Watkins & Gunn Solicitors, I knew it was the career for me!

“I hope the seminars are a great success and that people take advantage of them. I feel it is our duty to understand the law in the country in which we reside, so that we can ensure we are well-equipped to deal with legal matters such as conveyancing. It’s not often that legal seminars such as these are put on and I am very grateful to the Watkins & Gunn team for agreeing to commit their time to run these free events.”
