The Legal Requirements for Child Minders
It has been reported that there is currently a child care crisis for working parents who have to pay for child minders to look after their children over the summer holidays. We all want the best care for our children but what legal safeguards are in place to ensure that they are in safe hands?
A child minder is defined under the Children Act 1989 as a ‘person who looks after one or more children under the age of eight for more than a total of two hours a day on domestic premises (other than the child’s own home) for reward.’
A registered child minder is registered and regulated in Wales by the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW). A registered child minder can care for up to three children under 5 years old and three children aged 5-8 years old.
Child minders must-
• Comply with national standards e.g. they are obliged to undergo Criminal Records Bureau Checks.
• Have received first aid training.
• Have had their home inspected to ensure it is suitable for the children in their charge and will be subject to regular inspection.
• Have insurance in case a child in their care damages property or has an accident.
• Undergo child care training.
Your local Children’s Information Service can provide you with a list of registered child minders. If you have a registered child minder look after your child you may be eligible for help with their child care costs through the welfare benefits system. |
