The Smoking Ban-One Year On
Figures suggest that Wales has been largely compliant with the new rules. Only 79 individuals and one businessman have been fined since the ban came into force on 1st April 2007. Also only a small number of fines have been issued to businesses for failing to display the correct notices, suggesting that the correct information reached businesses in time for them to prepare for the changes.
It has been reported that 92% of non-smokers and 58% of smokers support the ban and it is estimated that a 2 - 4% reduction in smoking overall will be achieved as a result.
However, there have been some losers. Pubs it seems, may have lost custom as some have chosen to smoke in the comfort of their own home. In certain areas it is reported that trade has gone down by around 40%, even when money has been invested in smoking shelters.
Nonetheless it appears that a large proportion of the population are enjoying the benefits of the ban such as having a clean atmosphere and not having to worry about the smell of tobacco on their clothes and in their hair.

The long term effects of the smoking ban on businesses and the health of the nation still remain to be seen. However, with 6,000 people dying each year as a result of the effects of smoking, many see it as very much a step in the right direction.
