Press Release - Bakers Union

BAKERS UNION RAISES ITS DOUGH

Loaves of bread were hurled in the air outside a firm of solicitors recently causing quite a reaction from shoppers and passers by in Pontypool. The juggling act took place outside the prominent head office of Watkins & Gunn solicitors on Hanbury Road in Torfaen in front of a crowd of curious spectators.

The event was held in celebration of the news that The Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) has secured substantial funding from the Welsh Assembly Government to support their training requirements.

The Union has received a total of £100,000 as part of the Wales Union Learning Fund to provide training and learning centres in bakeries and food factories throughout Wales. The capital injection will aim to provide at least five learning and training centres for Union members who work within the industry. John James, District Secretary for the BFAWU in Wales and manager of the project believes this is a golden opportunity to support the education for members in Wales.

Commenting on the success of the bid, he said, “The partnership is delighted with this achievement for our Welsh members. At last our bakers in Wales will benefit from Welsh Assembly funding which will bring us in line with similar training projects in England.”

“To date, the union has formed an alliance with employers RF Brookes at Rogerstone, Memory Lane Cakes of Cardiff, Ferrari’s Bakery in Hirwaun, as well as Wales TUC, Improve, the Sector Skills Council for Food and Drink and the Basic Skills Agency” added Mr James.

The Union solicitors in Wales, Watkins and Gunn, also partner the project. Partner Clive Thomas said, “Education and training are fundamental to better prospects and enhancement of life. We are delighted to be part of this project.” The two year project will raise awareness of basic skills, as well as provide additional training for members through a skills analysis questionnaire. The project also aims to work closely with union learner representatives, and local providers.
