I want my money back!
After Christmas and the January sales many of us want to exchange or return unwanted items. Shops will often take goods back and refund your money within a set period whatever your reason for returning them. However, you also have statutory rights regardless of any store’s returns policy.
If you buy goods that are not sold as described or are not of satisfactory quality or fit for their purpose you can choose to return them and get a full refund as long as you do so within a reasonable time.
If you buy something at a store that you decide you don't like it or if it's an item of clothing that doesn't fit, you do not have an automatic right to return it. By law, stores don't have to have a returns policy, but if they do, they must follow it. Different regulations apply to most goods bought online, or by mail or phone order as you have a 7 day 'cooling-off' period during which you can change your mind and cancel the order.
If you want the person you've bought a gift for to be able to return it to the shop themselves then ask for a gift receipt. If the gift is faulty you could of course take the item back yourself and claim breach of contract.
When returning faulty goods, you don't have to have a receipt for it. However you must still be able to prove you have a claim by using a credit card slip or a bank statement.
So enjoy the sales and remember that when you buy in a sale you have the same rights as you do when buying full priced items–happy shopping ! |
