MANAGING SWINE FLU IN THE WORKPLACE
Swine Flu H1N1 is the latest worldwide concern which has been predicted to potentially reach pandemic status. It is feared that this may be accelerated by the beginning of the school term. This could have a devastating impact in the workplace.
It is therefore extremely important for employers to consider implementing sensible precautions within the workplace as a pandemic could lead to high levels of absence.
One option would be to consider alternative work patterns such as working from home or working flexible hours. Another option would be to consider alternative ways in which employees can communicate, thereby limiting face-to-face contact, for example telephone conferences, web cams and messenger discussions.
It is important for employees to tell their employer immediately if they feel that they may have swine flu symptoms. It is then equally important for employers to allow them to have sufficient time off in which to recover.
Employers should review their contractual sick pay arrangements in the event of extended levels of sickness absence.
There is a duty on the employer to take reasonable steps to ensure the safety of the employee. Hygiene precautions should be put in place to stop the spread of the disease. In particular employers should carry out a risk assessment to consider the effects on pregnant women, those with existing medical conditions or with disabilities.
Employers should review their business continuity plans and work jointly with their employee representatives to ensure that they have safeguarded themselves against a pandemic and its likely effects.
There is a significant amount of advice is available on the internet and a good starting point would be www.direct.gov.uk.
